30 years ago today, Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie

Pan Am Flight 103 was a scheduled service between Franfurt and Detroit, stopping at London and New York on route.

On 21 December 1988, the aircraft ”Maid of the Seas’ had taken off from Heathrow and was on route to New York, when there was an explosion on board caused by a bomb. The wreckage came down on the small Scottish town of Lockerbie. All 243 passengers and 16 crew on the stricken aircraft lost their lives; along with a further 11 people on the gound.
